Math Workshop is a classroom structure developed throughout the research of Dr. Jennifer Lempp and Dr. Nicki Newton as a way to support deliberate practice and small group instruction in mathematics, addressing the needs of the diverse learners in our classrooms.
I have had several requests for information and resources on Math Workshop and for now, this will be a holding place for these.
Math Workshop begins with students in community, engaged in a routine that focuses on number sense, communication, mathematical thinking and discourse. The following are suggested Instructional Routines to begin Math Workshop at different grade levels:
The main part of Math Workshop is an opportunity for students to engage in practice tasks and for the teacher to lead small group instruction. The following are considerations and suggestions for Practice Tasks for Math Workshop at different grade levels:
Here are some table tent cards for K-3 classes focused on number concepts and computational fluency:
(note that Shake and Spill recording forms are in this file: SD38 Grades 1-2 addition ten cards and printables)
Here are some table tent cards for grades 4-7 classes focused on number concepts and computational fluency:
The following are mini-clothesline numbers meant to be cut and folded into tent cards. I made the mini-clotheslines from chopsticks and scrap wood and have also used wood dowelling. The image in the file were created with using polypad through mathigon.org.
